Parrots and their colors…
Aside from their “talking” ability, parrots have become favorite avian pets because of their colorful appearance. In most parrot species, the most common color is green.
But, despite this fact, experts say that there is no pigment or tinge of green present in a parrots feathers. The only common colors present in most parrots are red and yellow their nature, natural habitat, and the food they eat are believed to contribute to the colors of their feathers.
Studies show that some parrots are reflecting various colors due to the Tyndall Effect. Here, light scatters, thus, reflecting off the feather structure and creates an illusion of a variety of colors. Aside from green that comes in various hues and tones other popular yet rare colors for parrots are blue and red.
Some parrots are blue
Blue parrots are the most in demand in various pet shops and pet stores today. This is because they are rare and quite expensive. The average range of blue parrots on the market is from $400 to $800 depending on the gender of the parrot and its ability to produce baby parrots of the same color when it meets with other parrots that possess other colors.
Experts say that most popular blue parrot in the history of the world in the Macaw-Glaucous or known as Blue Macaw. It originated from Argentina and is known as a shy yet sociable wild bird. What sets the Blue Macaw apart from the rest is that it possesses different feather colorations. In fact, aside from having blue feathers, it can easily change with hues and tones. Sadly, the Blue Macaw has been extinct for less than a century now.
Today, only various types of parrots have blue tinge in their feathers that make them so appealing to many avian breeders and pet owners.
Some parrots are red
The color red has long been associated with love, passion, desire, danger, speed, strength, violence, and anger. But in avian pets especially in parrots being red has really nothing to do with the above-mentioned association.
Today, red parrots are becoming more and more popular because they exude mystical beauty. The most popular red parrots in pet trades are the Red-Breasted Senegals. Although it has a moderate talking ability, many parrot enthusiasts purchase this red parrot because they are playful and independent always climbing, chewing, and playing with their toys.
Red-breasted Senegal’s are among the favorite selection of parrots because they have a friendly nature, their ability to learn and perform tricks as well as for producing low noise, which makes it suitable as a family pet especially for those who live in city apartments.
